The Underground Factories were planned in
haste and panic and propelled to reality by Lord Beaverbrook.
Spring Quarry, designed
as a dispersal factory for the Bristol Aircraft Company, was the
greatest and during its short life cost the tax payer £20,000,000.

Power
eggs, interchangeable aircraft engines designed to
reduce the time an aircraft was demobilised by engine failure,
were
large assemblies which needed plenty of roof clearance.
